New Hampshire
Homeschool Resources
Many Granite State families have decided that learning at home is the best educational environment for their children, allowing the most flexibility and individualized instruction. Home school learning models vary widely from family to family, but there are many curricula and resources available for homeschooling families to assist with their child’s learning adventure.
In New Hampshire, homeschooling regulations determine if a child is participating in a home instruction program is receiving regular, thorough instruction during the school year in the studies usually taught in the public schools. Parents must notify a “participating agency” of their intent to home educate within 5 days of beginning. This is a one-time only notification. Parents must then keep records of each child’s home education program in a portfolio. The portfolio remains private property of the family. Annually, students must complete an evaluation of their progress by either having a teacher review their portfolio to ensure the student is progressing, by completing a nationally recognized standardized achievement test, or another method decided upon by the parents and participating agency.
Choosing a home school method of learning may appear daunting at first, but New Hampshire has a large community of home school families and several groups, such as Granite State Home Educators, that are there for support and assistance.
